Superintendent of the Year

Since 1984, the Texas Association of School Boards’ (TASB) Superintendent of the Year (SOTY) award program has honored outstanding Texas administrators for achievement and excellence in public school administration.

Candidates are chosen for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality of education in their school districts, commitment to public support and involvement in education, and ability to build good employee relations among teachers and other staff members.  

Any local school board holding membership in TASB may nominate its superintendent for the award. Nominations must be made by the board by preparing the required documentation and submitting it to the designated regional ESC. Nominees must have served as superintendent of the district for at least three consecutive school years and be a member of TASA. Superintendents who receive the top state award cannot be nominated again during a five-year period. This rule does not apply to superintendents who were named regional winners or state finalists.

May 15 is the Deadline to submit your nomination for the 2017 Superintendent of the Year.

As a reminder, the process has been streamlined. Rather than a 12-page entry with 10 topics, the entry for 2017 is capped atfive pages totaland sent as aletter of recommendationfrom the school board president to Region 7 ESC. One addition to the criteria is that a superintendent must be certified.

In a letter of recommendation addressed to the SOTY Selection Committee, the school board president should cite details and examples of the superintendent’s leadership and explain why your chief administrator should be named Superintendent of the Year. The letter must be no longer than five pages. The entry also should include the Official Entry Form, Student Performance Work Sheet, school board Resolution, superintendent’s resume, and photo on a separate page. Specific topics that should be expanded onin the letter are the following:

  •  Leadership, Management, and School Climate
  • School Board-Superintendent Relations
  • School Improvement and Instructional Leadership
  • Fiscal Management
  • School-Community Relations

At the end of the letter, succinctly answer the following:
