In the News

November 2017

Nancy Cardoso has completed the Lindale Christian Women's Job Corp and pursuing her degree to help her husband open his own business.

Nancy attended the Parent Orientation meeting in August and I had a speaker there to present a local program that just started in Lindale last fall: Christian Women’s Job Corp.  I am proud to say that Nancy is my first Head Start Parent to enroll and take advantage of the program. She just graduated on October 16, 2017.  I have attached a picture of her with her son, Johan, the teacher, Ms. Jaster, and me.  Ms. Jaster presented her with fresh flowers and a card from the two of us.

Did You Know?

  • Did You Know all children need a healthy breakfast?  As children head back to school, this is the perfect time to emphasize how a healthy breakfast is crucial in providing children the nutrients and energy they need to succeed in school. Studies show that breakfast eaters tend to have higher school attendance, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomachaches in the morning, which means fewer trips to the school nurse. Children who eat breakfast are also less likely to be overweight and more likely to get enough calcium. All Head Start children are offered breakfast regardless of the time they arrive to school.

  • Did you know when extreme challenging behaviors arise, Head Start teachers can enter a Mental Health referral in the Head Start software tracking system that triggers support from the Head Start Mental Health Team

  • Head Start’s dietitian meets with the families of children with food allergies during the school year to help them understand their child’s food allergy and how to cope with new information and the new dietary guidelines for their families.

  • Region 7 ESC Head Start Disabilities staff can provide Response to Intervention support to the Head Start Pre-school teachers throughout the 2013-2014 school year? The Head Start Disabilities staff members are experienced diagnosticians who can assist the teachers in developing appropriate interventions, monitoring plans, and data collection for struggling Head Start students. For more information contact Head Start Disabilities Coordinator.

  • Region 7 ESC Head Start Education Staff will provide a variety of 17 School Readiness professional development opportunities for Head Start and Pre-K teachers throughout the region during the 2013-2014 school year? For more information contact Cathy Gaskin, Head Start Education Coordinator at 903-988-7635.

  • Food allergies in Head Start require our undivided attention?  Once a pediatrician or allergist confirms a child in Head Start has a food allergy, the Head Start Nutrition Coordinator immediately begins to collaborate with the school’s food service director, nurse, teacher and family service worker to ensure each child’s individual nutritional needs are met.

  • Did you know the ESC Region 7 Head Start program offers inclusion solutions for your Special Education PBMAS Indicator for LRE (ages 3-5)? Head Start can be included as a general education option on the continuum of services available to children ages 3-5 if they qualify for both Head Start and special education. Students served by PPCD and speech only students may be included!

  • Region 7 ESC Head Start has provided 26 classrooms with HATCH Smart multi-touch tables which improve social-emotional school readiness skills? For more information contact Jackie Jones, Assistant Director, Head Start at 903-988-6954.

  • Region 7 ESC Head Start has provided each of our Head Start teachers and students unlimited access to 300 eBooks utilizing their Hatch Teach Smart Systems? For more information contact Cathy Gaskin, Education Coordinator at 908-988-7635.

First Childcare Center in East Texas Completes Texas Rising Star Certification

Sandra Robinson, director of L & M Christian Daycare and Learning Center in Marshall, was presented with the certificate stating that the center has maintained their 4-Star rating in the Texas Rising Star program on May 8, 2015. The Texas Rising Star program is a voluntary, quality-based child care rating system of child care providers participating in the Texas Workforce Commission's subsidized child care program. It is available to Licensed Center and Licensed and Registered Child Care Home providers who meet the certification criteria. The providers that voluntarily achieve TRS provider certification are offering quality care that exceeds the State's Minimum Child Care Licensing Standards for director and staff qualifications, caregiver-child interactions, age-appropriate curricula and activities, nutrition and indoor/outdoor activities, and parent involvement and education. Texas Rising Star providers are in a position to contribute positively to the early development of the children they serve on a daily basis.  Congratulations to Sandra Robinson and all of the staff at the L & M Christian Daycare and Learning Center.
